Geotechnical engineering is a branch of civil engineering which is concerned with behaviour of earth materials. An individual who has completed the Masters’ programme in geotechnical engineering is open to a large number of job opportunities. RIET (Rajadhani Institute of Engineering and Technology) is the best college in Kerala that provides world-class education in this stream of study. The term geotechnics is currently used to describe both the theoretical and practical application of the discipline. Today geotechnical engineering has evolved and geosynthetics has helped to solve many conventional problems that are encountered by the engineers in this field. Geosynthetic products have a wide range of applications and are currently used in many civil and geotechnical engineering applications including roads, embankments, retaining structures, canals, landfills, bank protection and coastal engineering.

The full time, two year course is divided in to four semesters. For admissions, candidates should have undergone the B.Tech/B.E course in an institution approved by AICTE and candidates should have a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in the engineering examination in the relevant subject. For SC/ST candidates a pass in the engineering degree course is sufficient. For SEBC Students a minimum of 54% aggregate marks in the engineering degree examination is mandatory. Geotechnical Engineer plan, analyse and design the construction of foundations by assessing the properties of the earth materials. They also study the risk posed to a structure from natural hazards such as landslides, earthquakes etc. Some of the job opportunities after the successful completion of this course includes the following

1. Geotechnical Engineers in consultancy and construction firms
2. Can start one’s own subsoil investigation company
3. Technical officer in soil testing laboratories.
